Future of Jakarta
Jakarta is what is called, in planning and development parlance, a mega-city, and it is one of the most populous on earth. The population of jabotabek (the large metropolitan area comprised of Jakarta, Bogor, Tanggerang and Bekasi) is reaching 24 milion , the second larger in the world.The extremes of wealth and proverty in the city are evident in every neighborhood and the city has constant buzz of actifity at every hour. Jakarta is booming in every sense.
An estimated four mllion people commute in and out the city each day for work. The street are teeming with cars, motorbikes, people, buses, snack vendors and bajaj. There are dozens of new apartment and office towers going up all over the city, many of them with massive commercial components housing middle and high end retail stores and restaurants.
Because of Jakarta's exploding population, one that is growing by millions every year, there is naturally a crush in the existing infrastructure, and planned improvements struggle to keep up. Many of the ideas for the future of Jakarta are those that speak to the management of the needs of its growing population in ways that are innovative, thoughtful and ideally benefecial to its residents. So, who is minding the development of Jakarta, who is cultivating aspirations for the metropolis, and who is carrying out these Big Ideas?
